It was while watching a BBC documentary on Chatsworth House on Netflix one lazy afternoon, that Nicola first heard about Adele Astaire, sister to Fred Astaire. In the documentary, the narrator briefly mentioned that Charles Cavendish, who lived at the great estate in Derbyshire, England, had married Adele Astaire and set up married life in Lismore Castle, Co Waterford, Ireland. Nicola was intrigued to know more and set about researching the dancer’s story. She was fascinated to find out that Adele had been a huge star in the 1920s and had led a colourful, vivid life. She decided to write a novel about Adele’s life and as part of her research travelled to Boston, USA to view the Astaire archives.
